Week 6-Reasearching the Visual….

tv.pngToday’s topic was one my favorite topics. I really enjoyed having a lecture about this topic which was very interesting. Researching the visual was what we studied in class today. Analyzing the television was talked to about in the class it was discovered that a television was characterized as multifaceted medium of communication, needs and an approach. We covered four types of industries that use the television as a means of advertising or a medium of communication to the public. A model on the circuit of a television was explained. Firstly, commercial industry which is a huge profitable industry earning over billions annually through advertising, cable fees, DVD, sales or any other legal way for more money. Democratic institution is another example of an circuit. This type is described as part of democracy informing citizens and serving their needs and interest through news and electoral coverage. This is usually governed by public regulations and policies. A creative form which is unique and that has a distinct narrative structure and a set variety of genres to distinguish it from other media is referred to as Textual Form . This is also a platform for technology that is serving as the central screen point for a number of entertainment and information media in the home. Television produces a site of cultural representation giving it a chance to show our world and misconstrue a vision of national identity and distorting our perceptions of various groups of the people in the society. This idea is a connected idea of representation giving in-depth theory of it and how it goes into further thinking of media images as a mirror to the world. Talking and viewing, television has become apart of our everyday lives and has become a usual routine.A lil history was discussed today, in the lecture it was mentioned that the period in American television history from the 1940’s-1980’s was called the Classic Network Era when the television market was controlled by a few other large networks such as CBS. The Multi-Channel Era between 1980-1990s which only lasted 20 years. This era was much more advanced and different from the previous era because it included the indentation of the remote control, video cassette player and cable. This era gave viewers more choice and the chance to control what they wanted to watch. The last era and up to date era is called The Convergence Era which started in the year 2000 till date. This era deals with more advanced high tech media which is sometimes paid for. This type of era allows its viewers to watch media online on their laptops, iPads or even their phones but not always for free. Pausing or recording media is now available today. Before today if i was asked what i thought representation was i would say “anything that is seen”. i wouldn’t say I was completely wrong but in todays class representation was defined in depth. Representation is an object that is presented or depicted in a certain to be seen by viewers. People sometimes think Representation and Reality are the same but they are only mutually constitutive. This because Reality is only a Mirror of the actual thing that exists. They are also stereotypes and can produce either a positive/negative image. Its all real NOT fiction. seiki-40in-tv

In conclusion, todays lecture covered the topic Tv. I learned that TV does not only show images of reality but it can project an image of reality that does not only link up to reality but the hidden and concealed parts of everyday life or experiences. I also realized from todays lecture that TV is a medium so it cannot capture reality but can always re-present it to viewers. Thats why when Reality shows such as Love And Hip Hop producers, friends and family  make statements like “This show is real” its a bit hard to believe. Questions should be asked like “Who has been removed from the picture?’ or “Who has the right to speak?” or “What counts as everyday life”. Mary Beltran’s criteria was discussed today before lecture ended her questions was asked which caused everyone to think real deep. “Are the characters of color fully recognized individuals?” or “Do the writers and producers have full knowledge or are aware of  and even interested about the lives of non-white characters?” and i think this is something to look over because personally i believe all the questions asked their answers are NO. Non-white characters haven’t really been given the chance for them to be fully recognized as a character in the film industry. I personally think the reason to this producers may feel that majority of the public will loose interest  in their show or film esp. if the film or show has been running for so many years.
